Healthy vs UNHEALTHY foods for your budgie

Healthy vs Unhealthy foods to feed your budgie

It is important that you give your budgie healthy foods to give them the vitamins they need. Some foods are for giving them treats, some for eating a few times a week and others that should be given frequently as a healthy diet. The most healthy diet for budgies is fruit. If your budgie is used to seeds then there are ways you can get it to eat fruit as well (I will tell you later on). If your budgie does not eat fruit at all you can ask the vet to give you powder which puts the vitamins your pet bird needs in its water.

HEALTHY

The most healthy food there is for a budgie is fruit and veggies. There is a list of fruit and veggies you can give to your budgie but it cannot be avocado or garlic. These foods are poisonous to birds, just like your saliva. Fruit and veggies contain vitamins that your budgie needs to stay healthy. Make sure you know what your budgie’s favourite fruit or veg because some budgies can be scared of the different ones you choose. If your budgie is new to fruit, there are ways to introduce them to it. Blueberry likes to eat apples. Wally has tried a variety and likes a few. Berry was scared of fruit so I did what is shown below. Did you know Berry’s first fruit was blueberry?!

Healthy fruit and veg for budgies

  1. Apple

  2. Strawberry

  3. Blueberries

  4. Banana

  5. Raspberries

  6. Kiwi

  7. Watermelon (good for giving in summer)

  8. Melon

  9. Cucumber (good for giving in summer)

  10. Orange

  11. Pineapple

  12. Carrot

  13. Tomatoes

  14. Lettuce

How to make your

budgie eat fruit

  1. Wait until your bird is hungry (you can take its food bowl out for a little)

  2. Pick the fruit or veg you wish to give to your budgie

  3. Sprinkle millet or ordinary seeds on top

  4. Give it to the budgie

  5. It should start eating. If it is a fruit like strawberry, the bird would shake its head; your budgie has tasted it!

  6. Repeat this every day

  7. If your budgie starts eating it without seeds, it is most likely they like it! :-)

Okay

Some seeds are fine if they are given a couple of times in the week. Ordinary seeds can be bought from pet stores and from online. You can put a handful in your hands and hand feed your budgie. It is a good way to make your budgie bond with you.

Unhealthy

The most unhealthy food for budgies is millet. It is usually used for a treat because it is not very healthy, but can be used for a diet (on my opinion) at least once a week. It should not be a budgie’s daily diet unless it has vitamins in its water. Budgies can be trained to do tricks and can be awarded with millet. It can also be a good treat for earning your budgie’s trust.

MAKE SURE SURE YOU AVOID CHOCOLATE AND AVOCADO - TOXIC TO BIRDS!!!

Can you give eggs to budgies?

Yes you can! It can be a different diet for your budgie to try out and is also a great source of protein!

I am happy to answer any questions!
